A wild and thrilling middle-grade adventure with an important environmental message, set in an all-too-possible dystopian future Australia.

After a fungus has wiped out the all-important grasses on which most of our foodstuff are based, Ella and her brother Emery are alone in a city that's starving to death. If they are going to survive, they must get away, upcountry, to find Emery's mum. But how can two kids travel such big distances across a dry, barren and dangerous landscape? Their dogs take them sledding back to the origins of humanity on the continent and a way to preserve its future.

Bren says: 'I hope that The Dog Runner will get young people thinking and talking about the ways we currently manage our environment, where we source our food, and what we eat. Food security is an important issue, easily overlooked, and Australia is an interesting place to consider this, as it was extensively and successfully managed and farmed prior to the arrival of Europeans, their animals and plants.'

Bren's first middle-grade novel, How To Beewon the Children's Book of the Year for its category in both Australia and New Zealand in 2018 and was warmly received here in the UK. This second title will appeal to a generation anxious to learn about the environment and fight the threat posed by climate change, as well as those who love a great adventure and empathetically-drawn characters.

Nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2020; Winner, Children's Book of the Year New Zealand 2019; Shortlisted, Red Magazine Big Book Award 2019; Shortlisted, Sefton Super Reads 2020. Shortlisted, Australian Children's Book Awards 2020
